ALMOST READY

Almost Ready

The dog curls up in the corner
away from the fire.  Snow creeps in
where the door hangs poorly.  I'm happy,
against all odds.  Maybe later

I'll go into the woods and search
for the moon.  Five hundred miles
from the ocean, under pine trees and maple, I'll taste
salt, feel my body rock, and be ready, almost, to die.
